Vera Wang Charges Customers to Try On Dresses

By April 4, 2013 Fashion

Yes, you read it correctly, US fashion designer Vera Wang is charging her Shanghai customers to try on her dresses. A new charge of £320.00 (3,000 Yuan), has been made to anyone who wants to try on the exclusive designs. This is because of fraud in the area, and also to stop any damage to the designs. The charge will buy the customer a 90 minute slot to try on dresses, but if they do not buy anything, they will not get refunded, only when they purchase an item, will the £320.00 be deducted from sale price. I found this ridiculous. I am happy that they are trying to protect the designs from damage, but this whole ‘fraud’ thing, is going to happen anyway? In fashion, fraud is one of the biggest threats, it happens every season in all the new collections. Trends are fraud, as someone has to start it? I know it’s not literally the same thing, but I seriously cannot get my head around the fact that Vera Wang is charging £320.00 for somebody to try on a dress. People who go into designer stores, will have the money to go in a shop, they won’t just go into a shop and frantically try on dresses like they do in ‘the movies’. I would say there is even a ‘designer etiquette‘ through out expensive brands. For example, before christmas I was walking around Toulouse, and spotted a Louis Vuitton store.

My first thoughts were, RUN!! I ran over to the shop window, and gazed at all the handbags in the window, way out of my price range, but as 12 year old fashion blogger who pretty much looks at clothes everyday, I had to have a peak, inside the shop. I walked in quietly with mum behind. As usual there was a man at the door who was making sure the ‘etiquette’ ran in order. There were 2 ladies at the counter, who said hello (Bonjour to be precise), as I turned around they looked me up and down, and it was very awkward, as they knew that I was here just to look and not buy. I went over and looked at some other bags, which to my surprise were actually quite nice! (I’m not the biggest fan of Louis Vuitton, I fell into the label trap! Naughty Tolly!) Mum was rushing me to get out because she said it wasn’t the sort of shop to just look round, which was right, it wasn’t. Which brings me back to Vera Wang. I expect they do get quite a lot of #fangirls coming in, just like I did, but the majority of people are going to people who know what they’re going in for, so why charge them? It’s not like the shop is getting Primark amount of people a day?!
My answer is simply money, to be honest of course it’s annoying when somebody rips a hole in a dress, but a big brand like Vera Wang, do they really need another £320.00?

Do you think there should be a charge? Would you go and try on a dress again? Make sure to tell me your thoughts in a comment below!
