5 Lessons I Learned from Reading Vivienne Westwood’s Memoir

By September 10, 2016 Fashion

I promised a while ago that I would do a write-up of Vivienne Westwood’s latest memoir, written by herself and Ian Kelly, so that’s exactly what I’m going to do today! The book has been available for a fair amount of time now (…I received it at Christmas…), but that doesn’t take away from some of the powerful messages within it. I’m going to be sharing with you, five of the lessons I learned from the 400 or so pages…

#1 – You have to just go for it…

Apart from the ambition to prove something to myself, there was also, for me, a kind of duty. A duty that I owed to fashion or to myself. That something I could do, I somehow ought to do. Because if I don’t do it, nobody else would. Just like my politics really. Just like me as a little girl, ‘It was me’. I don’t know, so that’s why I did it, and although it was at times a chore, I don’t regret it. Just the opposite. I proved what I wanted to prove and I have found real satisfaction in it, as well as a voice. But if somebody had come along to me in 1979 and said, “Look, Vivienne, you’re really good but I’m as good as you are and I can do that job for you. You go off to university.”, I probably would have said, “Oh, all right, ok I will.

Page 240

I’m a big believer in ‘everything happens for a reason’ and the whole ‘we’re on a journey’ way of looking at life, so this really resonated with me. I’ve always known in my mind what I’m here for, so knowing that she had a vision in her mind and didn’t let other people stop her, is really empowering. You can’t let people who are doing similar things get you down because there is only one version of you. You are the only person who can create something unique and unique, even if it’s similar or someone is capable of doing the same thing.

My goal in fashion combines numerous different factors, a couple of which weren’t yet in my mind a few years ago, but that’s okay; it’s all adding up to what will be my end goal. Nobody else can achieve that but me.

#2 – Comfortable is just an idea…

The convention that comfortable clothes should be loose-fitting is a convention of our time. I feel comfortable when I think I look great, and I couldn’t bear to put on shapeless, stamped-out mass-manufactured clothes. I design clothes in the hope of breaking convention. Comfort is to do also with completing a mental image of what you want to look like. What you are and who you are.

Page 306

I’m also a big believer in being yourself and the concept of being comfortable meaning being comfortable within yourself before anything else. I actually wrote a piece on a similar topic, but this little segment really solidifies the idea. It also gives me motivation for my own fashion design career, because I too, want to design clothes that break convention and redefine it.

Comfort is whatever feels normal for you. It’s an idea that was created to keep us feeling safe… but in my opinion, you can only really feel safe and content when you are doing exactly what you need to be doing, and exactly what you believe in.

As you will read in that blog post of mine, for me, comfort is wearing what I want even if it’s not the norm. It’s wearing leather jackets instead of floral dresses and having memories to look back on where I’m wearing Dr Martens instead of sandals. Plus – I definitely don’t want to be wearing mass-manufactured clothes anymore, which brings me on to my next lesson learned…

#3 – Becoming more ethical and sustainable really does take time…

“Guilty”, Vivienne tends to say, sometimes even literally holding up her hands. “One answer is that you have to start from where you are. Another is that I reach people – people who read fashion magazines for instance – who would never have heard about some of this otherwise.”

Page 381

Reading yet another ethical fashion icon talk about how they’re not even perfect themselves truly does make you feel like you can breathe. I’ve discussed this before, but you really do have to look at it all from the situation you are in. If you can help spread the message at the same time, then that’s just as important to take into account. You’re doing twice as much if you’re being conscious as well as spreading the same ideals. Yet another lesson that nicely ties in with a recent blog post of mine, where I spoke about why influencers need to use their influence.

#4 – …and educating yourself on the topics matter.

Johnny Rotten’s songs really were very clever, weren’t they? ‘No future. Your future dream is a shopping scheme.’ We need to stop educating people to be consumers and educate them so they are capable of thinking with their own minds.

Page 213

I don’t care how many times I’ve reiterated this fact, or how many times I’ve stated I don’t care how many times I’ve reiterated this fact, but it really is important to educate yourself on topics if you want to fully understand them. Reading news articles is all well and good, but as soon as you dig a little deeper, you’ll start to realise how significant these matters really are. And Vivienne is right – Johnny Rotten’s lyrics are clever and they work just as well as they did within the heart of the punk era, as they do now.

Another mini lesson I suppose is that we really do owe everything to Vivienne when it comes to punk, whether that’s in terms of music or fashion.

#5 – Perhaps there’s a reason that designers are only wearing simple clothes on the catwalk…

I nearly missed the [Pirate] show, and Malcolm made me go on stage, saying ‘They want to see you as you are, they want to see that you’ve been working.

Page 239

The fifth and final lesson is a bit of an odd one, and more of a realisation to be honest as I’ve always been curious as to why designers don’t seem to express themselves when it comes to taking their bow and applaud on the catwalk. Most designers tend to be wearing all black, or monochromatic outfits and it’s always seemed bizarre to me when the clothes they’re showcasing are so creative and individual.

This line makes a lot of sense to me now (even if that wasn’t its intent), and is something I’ll take into account the next time I’m watching the shows. After all, designing isn’t an easy job, so if they feel comfortable in what they work in, then that’s all that should matter, and that’s all that we should expect to see – it’s a form of realism.

There’s so much more to her book than all of that, though. It’s really opened my eyes up to how a career can drastically change and how creating long lasting relationships are so vital to achieving that. It’s also opened my eyes up to how much influence Vivienne has really made and how she too, travelled and experienced part of her journey in Italy.

I’m definitely going to learn more about topics mentioned in the book, specifically Climate Revolution and how I can make my mark in the world of sustainability. I’d highly recommend picking up a copy!

I’m now off to read some more of To Die For by Lucy Siegle, and check the post box to see if my copy of Threadbare has arrived; it’s a book all about the fashion industry and sex trafficking, in comic book form! What’s next on your reading list?

ASOS Personal Stylist 2014 Review

By June 24, 2014 Fashion

When I knew that ASOS were updating their ASOS Personal Stylist service, I knew I had to do another review. I trialled their first version back in 2012… it wasn’t the best of posts, but it actually seemed quite popular. I was intrigued to know what it was all about this year, so here you go! I promise this isn’t sponsored… although I wish it was… *cough* 😉

ASOS STYLISTS – OPEN FROM 3-8PM SUNDAY TO FRIDAY & SATURDAY 12-4PM – UK ONLY

asos personal stylist review 2014 jose asos Firstly, you have to fill in a little form so your stylist knows exactly what you want. Previously you just popped in your name, but now they suggest that you pop in exactly what you want. I said ‘I want some ideas of how to layer tulle… and I also want to find some Ashish style sparkles.’ This was just for a taster, but I did genuinely want to know what was available.

asos personal stylist review 2014 jose asos asos personal stylist review 2014 jose asos You get to chose who you want to talk to, it tells you which stylists are available or which ones you have to queue for (I think one of the longest waits was 27 minutes! What?!)… I think I took too long deciding because ‘Joseh’ or ‘Jose’, popped up! At first I was a bit weirded out because on the previous one they just got straight to the point, but I guess it’s in the name, this is ‘personal’. The widget is clear and easy to read with the nice colours… along the same lines as messaging on an iPhone.

asos personal stylist review 2014 jose asos I was asked questions about my style, size and shape which helped ‘Joseh’ out. I explained that I wanted to know what sort of thing I could wear underneath a sheer tulle midi skirt (see here), and that my budget was up to about £30. I was introduced to the ‘Style Board’ which is a bit like a ‘live’ pinning service for you and your stylist.

asos personal stylist review 2014 jose asos The ‘Style Board’ opens in a new window and you can add images from Google, your computer, or from the ASOS site. I added a picture of my main gal’ Susie Lau, and a snap of the tulle skirt I was talking about. It was a lot easier adding my own image because ‘Joseh’ could see exactly what I wanted and what I meant. It’s surprisingly easy to use, and has that fun part to it… seeing new images being added by somebody in another place… the small things!

asos personal stylist review 2014 jose asos One of the best parts is that it tells you what your stylist is doing, in the last version you just knew when they were typing, but with this it tells you exactly what they are doing. Like I said, it really is quite personal, but once you get used to it, it’s actually quite interesting. Also, the ‘Style Board’ gives you something to do whilst you wait… it really is quite the improvement.

asos personal stylist review 2014 jose asos asos personal stylist review 2014 jose asos Some of the features of the ‘Style Board’ included being able to save, and add products to your bag in which your stylist had chosen, as well as refine your searches so it’s easier to find, definitely a time saver! I ended up saving 2 things in my saved list and they went straight into it, no hassle at all!

asos personal stylist review 2014 jose asos If you don’t like something there is also a hide function which means your stylist knows what not to look for. It’s helpful to get to a shortlist of things you really genuinely love. The whole layout of the page is great and I love the fact that the stylist says with you the whole time. No checking back to other windows, I hate that!

asos personal stylist review 2014 jose asos Improvements: I love the fact there is a ‘Style Board’ now… it makes it a lot easier to save items and keeps everything under one roof. The layout and interface is a lot nicer and keeping track of what your stylist is doing is a great help.

Cons: I would say it makes it a bit more of a lengthier process than the last version.. before I feel like you could just ask for one item you were looking for, where as here it’s more for ‘looks’ or a ‘bunch of things’. My whole session took 45 minutes (Yup!), I definitely feel like it would be something you’d only use if you are really struggling with something.

Stylist Feedback: ‘Joseh’ or ‘Jose’ was really helpful and well mannered. He was patient and seemed genuinely interested what I was looking for. He found some great pieces although they weren’t 100% what I was looking for. I wouldn’t say he necessarily sold anything to me, but then again I guess he didn’t really know what I suited etc.

Overall: I would say it has improved, but the fact that I felt like I had to be creating a look rather than just quickly asking if they did X or Y, made me feel like I should just leave  it for special occasions, although the stylist seemed like he should be able to help with just any 1 product. I’m interested in trying out the other stylists though, I already feel like 2 of them have my type of style, and they have been followed on Twitter!

Would I recommend the service? Hmm… yes if you have the time. I think if you’re looking for an outfit for a special occasion this will be absolutely perfect, plus the ‘Style Board’ is quite fun 🙂 Rating: 8/10

Posh Wosh Soap Review*

By February 1, 2013 Beauty, DIY & Lifestyle, Fashion

photo 1 photo 2Posh Wosh Soaps are handmade soaps which are suitable for Vegetarians, they are not tested on animals, and they are all Paraben Free. Their soaps are specially made as they keep in the magical ingredient which is Glycerine. Glyrcerine is moisturising on your skin, and many highstreet brands leave this out, which is why they say ‘don’t wash your face with soap, as it dries your skin out’, but Posh Wosh Soaps, won’t! Posh Wosh Soaps are also in expensive, which is unusual for handmade soaps, which is also brilliant! Their products are priced at £2.25, or £12 for 6 Soaps. They have Orange, Raspberry, Lemon, Coconut, Rose & Lavender.

The reason I started making my own soaps was because they look better, smell better and wash better – and for a small amount, I get to enjoy being “Posh” every time I “Wosh” – Anne Marie Gordon (Creator)

photo 3 photo 4I received 3 lovely bars of soap, here are the ‘Simply Raspberry‘ and the ‘Simply Coconut‘ bars. I love how they are wrapped, they are super cute, and simple! I would probably say they look a lot slicker and bit nicer to have in your bathroom, as with normal high street soaps, I feel they can be quite clumpy, and rather boring. The scent of them wrapped up, was literally amazing. My brother couldn’t stop sniffing them (and he’s a 19 year old, mountain biker), and neither could I, they seriously smelt divine! They are quite big in size, and I think I will get good use out of them.

photo 2 photo 3I’m not allergic to anything, but sometimes it’s good to know the ingredients of what you’re putting on your skin, as your skin is very delicate and should be looked after extra specially, but, in the Winter months my skin can become a little bit more sensitive, and I think all these ingredients look pretty good to me! And, knowing that the special moisturisng ingredient, of which is Glycerine, makes me feel like it is going to work a lot better!

photo 4 photo 5I also received the ‘Simply Lemon‘ bar, which I tested out, because I really want to save the others, as Coconut and any type of Berry are my favourite scents! When I was showering, I found that the scent actually became stronger as it mixed with the water, which is pretty cool! I found it was quite light on my skin, as in with other soaps they can be heavy and cloggy when you first apply it, but this one definitely wasn’t, it almost felt like I wasn’t putting anything on (but in a good way 🙂 ). I could tell it was doing its ‘soap’ job, because my skin started to feel lighter and obviously, cleaner. In one quick shower, I would say I used about a ‘line’ on the bar of soap (see above pictures), which is pretty good compared to ordinary soaps in which shrivel up to nothing within seconds. After washing, my skin felt quite soft and felt ‘happy’. I usually moisturise afterwards, to lock in the goodness, so that did take a little bit of the scent away, but I definitely didn’t smell ‘soapy’, which I like.

SCENT: 8/10 – They smell amazing before & during use.

AFTER USE: 7/10: My skin felt clean and nourished!

LOOK: 8/10 – Super duper cute packaging, would be great for a gift!

OVERALL: 8/10 – Would definitely recommend for people who are on a budget, but want good quality stuff! Plus, they are really friendly people!

The feel of my crop top is amazing! It’s really lightweight, but also very strong and durable material at the same time. The colour is brilliant! It is very bright, but also has that slight acidic wear sort of look. In the summer I will definitely be wearing this, as it is perfect! I think it looks great with the pastel colours too though, and you can layer it in so many ways! Crop tops are sometimes quite hard to work, but I find these too colours make it really simple! Voodoo Girl have some awesome pieces on sale, and I think you guys should check it out! If I could have one thing right now, it would have to be their waistcoat! It looks so nice, and I expect it is very good quality just like this top! Although for some the prices may seem quite high, for the quality they are worth it! I think for a really nice gift (or even treat yourself!) The products are really worth it!
