Breaking News, I Have Hair on My Legs

By May 11, 2018 Beauty

Today, I’m putting ethics and sustainability to one side. Today, I’m talking about body hair.

Why I Decided to Embrace My Leg Hair

If I remember correctly, I’d just come out of the shower, my hair wrapped up in giant twisted towel upon my head, as I lay on my bed in a dressing gown, not quite ready to slip into my pyjamas for the evening. I was probably absentmindedly scrolling through Tumblr on my laptop which I’d left out, procrastinating on unravelling my hair and brushing it through so it could be dried, when I looked down at my legs.

It had been a while since I’d last touched them and by that I mean, it had been a while since I’d removed the hair that grew upon them. I’d taken care of them just before Christmas because I’d felt like it was necessary to do so at such a festive time of the year, even though it was cold and snowing and I knew I’d barely look down at them for weeks on end as I concealed them with 200-denier tights and different pairs of trousers.

I must have stroked my hand down my leg and felt the hairs which had regrown stand up between my fingers because suddenly my legs had my full attention. I remember looking down and for the first time, feeling genuinely disturbed by something I saw on my body (the first time since I had chicken-pox, that is).

Quite honestly, it scared me. It scared me because I was looking down at something so natural and meant-to-be yet it felt and looked alien. I realise that how I’m articulating this moment in time might seem a little dramatic and hyperbolic but it’s exactly how I remember it. It unsettled me.

Why I Decided to Embrace My Leg Hair

I immediately jumped onto a Facebook conversation with a close-friend because although I knew what this was all about, I still needed to vent and exert this new-found energy and even anger, somehow.

I started to ‘shave’ (well, depilate with hair removal cream) my legs when I was about 13. I remember nervously asking my mum what I should buy in order to deal with it and she guided me down this new path of grooming. It wasn’t my first introduction to this aspect of ‘being a woman’, of course.

I remember a couple of years prior, sitting in a line with my back up against a school wall with a group of friends as we looked out our legs in front of us, several of the girls commenting on the fact that they needed to start shaving when they were barely even 12.

It was always a given that I would eventually start shaving myself, and so, that time came around and it became ingrained in my routine. Every 4 days, I’d jump in the shower with hair on my legs and vacate with dolphin-smooth skin… up until that day a few months ago, when I looked down and realised I’d forgotten what it felt like to see my legs do what they’re supposed to do.

This moment of disturbance came out of laziness because hair-removal isn’t exactly an easy task, as most of you will probably have experienced. Even if you’re a man who only shaves their beard, you can still relate that it takes time and patience to complete the job at hand, precisely. After all, if nobody was seeing my legs during winter, surely I should take a break until the sunshine reappears?

Christmas and its festivities had passed and now I was faced with this dilemma. Do I ignore the fact that I have become afraid of a natural process or do I challenge it?

In the aforementioned Facebook conversation, my friend and I discussed the hair-removal industry. A point arose, suggesting that hair-removal is, in one sense, a hypocritical action. We’ve become a society which doesn’t want to see hair on a woman’s legs yet we put so much attention on that (whether it be just day-to-day or in broader terms with things like advertising), that we almost highlight leg hair more than we would if we just let it be.

And yes, this is a recent societal development (at least from what I know in the West). In the early 1900s, due to more modest clothing being in fashion, women didn’t concern themselves with hair removal on a regular basis.

Why I Decided to Embrace My Leg Hair

Of course, it isn’t just leg hair that ties into this. All forms of body hair have been warped and deemed as ‘unacceptable’ when it comes to women’s bodies but I will talk more about why I chose to specifically focus on leg hair, further on.

I will add here, that if anyone jumps in to suggest that it isn’t just an issue that women have to face, then I suggest you move along because I would rather you save the both of us time and energy for a more intelligent discussion.

At that moment, I nervously decided to say yes to the challenge to stop removing the hair on my legs. I didn’t give myself any rules and I decided that if I ever felt uncomfortable, I would do whatever it took to make me feel myself again. I allowed myself to conceal my legs however I pleased and I made sure that I was always asking myself if I was doing it for the right reasons.

I call it a challenge because I believe it was. After four years of consistently removing my leg hair (more so in summer, less so in winter), it was a strange feeling to suddenly stop and watch my legs develop and grow as they would do without interference. After all, why are my legs any different to my arms?

Why I Decided to Embrace My Leg Hair

Naturally, like all change, it took a while for me to adjust but I felt comfortable in myself after not too long (it was honestly a relief to not have to worry about when I next needed to ‘deal with them’) but then I became faced with displaying my legs to the rest of the world as the warmer weather crept in and trousers felt like they were beginning to suffocate me.

Perhaps the challenge wasn’t necessarily allowing myself to grow my hair out, rather, it was challenging myself to ignore what people might think because we do live in a society where it is deemed as the norm to have shiny-smooth legs. (Even in razor adverts, most of the time the model seen demonstrating the product is often shaving against bare skin, already.)

I started gradually, as I allowed myself to do. I wore a floaty maxi dress with calf-high Dr Marten’s so you could only see a tiny slither of skin when the wind blew. I wore a skirt with knee high socks so it was only my kneecaps showing (which are the least hairy part of my legs).

And then I went to the beach.

I took off my skirt and I wore shorts and socks until I was overheating in a start-of-spring heatwave. I looked around me, at the people oblivious to anything I was doing as they soaked up the sun and the sound of the sea rolling in. I finally removed my socks and I ran towards the shore and I realised, it was something I hadn’t ever thought I would see myself doing.

It may seem like a first-world problem to have to focus on this all so heavily but it felt so invigorating. I’d passed the challenge almost unintentionally and within a few weeks, I was walking around town with shorts on and arriving at the beach again in just a bikini.

Nobody stopped and stared like I’d been imagining. Nobody called out and laughed. Because honestly? Nobody has the time to stop and look and decipher whether your legs are disturbing or not. Only you do because it’s your body. Try it yourself; see how many pairs of legs you actually pay attention to unless they’re being covered by an amazing pair of printed trousers.

These sorts of thoughts started to enter my mind when I listened to an episode of The Guilty Feminist podcast quite some time ago, where the hosts discussed the fact that these sorts of actions towards our bodies are all part of a choice. The important part to remember is why you made that choice in the first place.

I didn’t decide to start removing the hair on my legs at 13 because I felt genuinely uncomfortable with how they looked or how I was being perceived. I just knew it was expected of me. However, when you make such a personal choice based on what you believe other people will think of you, that’s not your choice. That’s you letting other people decide for you and for the most part, they’re strangers.

Why I Decided to Embrace My Leg Hair

As you’ve probably gathered, I still haven’t touched my legs since December. This is not to say I don’t participate in any other forms of hair removal. For example, especially in the summer, I don’t enjoy having hair under my arms when I’m hot and sweaty. That’s just not for me, out of physical comfort.

Although, for any part of my body, my mind could change in a few months, or even weeks. This is why I hope this doesn’t come across as me preaching or making anybody feel bad for the choices that they make.

It’s almost been an experience in honour of my 13-year-old self, who didn’t understand why she was doing what she was doing other than that it was expected of her.

I still believe it is expected of me (not necessarily individually, but myself, as a woman) and I still know that there are many girls (and boys) who will grow up believing this is what should be done. It should always be a case of what you want, even if it takes you time and a bit of a challenge, to truly understand what that means.

For anyone who has contemplated taking this sort of challenge for themselves, I would like to point out that during all of this (and even now), I was using Instagram as a tool to inspire me.

By following along with people who embraced natural beauty and even artists who used body hair in their work, I was able to ease myself into it whilst feeling supported. I even took to painting a ‘leg self-portrait’ to capture the journey, which is, of course, still continuing.

I’ve even started to notice that if I see a pair of hairy pins () in my feed, I don’t automatically jump to assuming it’s a man.

This is also a chance for me to say thank you to anyone who has more directly supported me in this by responding to my Instagram Stories about the topic. Community is so important and in this case, it can do a whole lot of good.

Add this GIF sticker to your Instagram Stories by searching “@tollydollyposh” under GIFs. For all your hairy leg (or pin) needs!

What Do You Want to Know About Being Yourself & Self Expression?

By January 29, 2016 DIY & Lifestyle

Other than fashion, another thing that I am wholly passionate about is… self-expression and just being yourself. I don’t really know where it came from, but it’s just always been there within me. The idea of everyone being themselves and embracing the fact that no one person is the same has just always been such an interesting and exciting concept to me…

being yourself self expression confidence Q&A

~ (A LITTLE SNIPPET OF ME) ~

…and I want to share that. I know I’ve spoken a couple of times about the topic on here before (like with my “How To Soothe A Sore Thumb” or “Fat vs Thin” posts) but I really want to try and infuse it into Tolly Dolly Posh Fashion this year. It’s great too because being yourself ties into fashion really well. I mean, what’s the main way we all express ourselves? Through our clothes.

It’s one thing you can’t skip out one each day, so what you put on always channels some form of message. Seriously, you’re feeling a bit fed up and lazy? Putting on comfy clothes literally expresses that (we all do it – even though being yourself certainly isn’t all about fashion).

But the question is… how? I’m all about writing lengthy posts about my own experiences but I think this is one of those topics where we have to talk to each other about it. Does anyone remember when I did “The Ultimate Guide To Being A Teenager“? Well, that was a great example of me taking your questions and queries and creating content from them and I’m hoping it helped.

being yourself self expression confidence Q&A

~ BEING YOURSELF ISN’T ALL ABOUT FASHION ~

Although I loved that yearly series and I’d be happy to bring it back, I’d also love to move forward and do something more regularly, whether that’s in the form of videos (yes I know, I’ve kind of gone off YouTube again haven’t I?) or Q&As, I don’t know, so that’s why I’m writing this post.

Let’s have a bit of a chat! I’m leaving a little submission form below for those of you don’t necessarily want to leave a full comment. Just let me know what sorts of topics you’d be interested in me talking about to do with self-expression and being comfortable in your own skin. Leave a single question if you like! Here are some ideas (they don’t even have to be obviously questions about being you… simple lifestyle type ones can be a good start)…

“How do you choose what to wear in the morning?”
“Do you wear make-up?”

“Would you class yourself as confident?”
“How do you pick yourself up when you feel insecure?”

Bye Bra ‘Discusses’ My Breasts

By May 21, 2014 General

Dear Bye Bra,

The reason I have yet to reply to your first email about sampling the Bye Bra breast lift tape, is because…

1 – I am in no way interested in reviewing a breast lift tape.
2 – I am never ever going to show my ‘breasticles’ on this blog… EVER.
3 – I wouldn’t buy breast lift tape anyway, so why would I want to review it on my blog?

Oh wait, hang on! Silly me, almost forgot… I’m 14, and I have nothing going on in the breast department… FLAT. AS. A. WALL.

I’m glad you like my blog, but next time, I would recommend that you check the bloggers you are emailing instead of putting ‘Dear owner of [insert URL]’ and wasting my time (…I hope ‘the board meeting which you discussed my blog in’ went well…), and embarrassing yourself.

Thanks, but definitely NO THANKS,
Bye Bye Bra…

New Year Blogging Q&A With Let’s See

By December 26, 2013 DIY & Lifestyle, Fashion

Hello everybody! How are you my chums? Did you have a nice Christmas? Today I have a nice relaxed blog post whilst you all browse the Boxing Day sales, with my lovely advertiser, Bas from Let’s See! (If you want to see your blog here, then look at my packages here!) Images from Let’s See

new year blogging let's see photography blog

Will you be changing anything on your blog for the new year? I’m moving to the Netherlands in January to study, so I guess everything will change. I’ll be broke for one, so less money for film. And I’ll have new things to photograph, I’m beginning to think I’ve sucked Cape Town dry.

Have you thought of your blogging resolutions for 2014 yet? Well to continue from the previous answer, my plan is to try and take only one roll of film a month, because of my student budget. I usually just shoot until my finger is raw, sometimes whole rolls in a day. (Developing film is super cheap in South Africa, compared to Europe. Asia was cheap too.) Also I’ve been working a lot these past few years so I’ve never really had to worry too much about expenses. This new resolution means I’ll have to limit myself to only a handful of photos at a time, which will be hard. I think some of the spontaneity will be lost, but also it will be interesting because every click of the shutter will be so much more important…

What’s your favourite thing about the new year? Christmas being over. I hate Christmas. Can someone find a way to successfully incorporate anything “Christmassy” into a summer Christmas? We just use the same traditions, but everything is half hearted because it’s too hot for fake snow and hot chocolate and candy canes and romantic walks in gloved hands and family bonding and general good will at all. Everyone’s too busy sweating and lying by the pool in a bikini to do anything Christmassy. Also, imagine a mall packed with frantic people, sweating. Add tinny Christmas carols. Done.

new year blogging let's see photography blog

Do you stay up late for the big countdown, or just sleep through it all? I’m usually working. This year I’m playing in the band for the Rocky Horror show, we’re doing a late show on New Year’s Eve and then there’s a party.

What would you wear to a New Year celebration? I think people are dressing up, I’m not sure as what. Theatre people go all out when they dress up, so it should be crazy. Although on the last dress-up occasion, the drummer wore eyeliner and thought that was his costume… I haven’t decided what I’ll wear yet.

Will you be taking any festive pictures, and with what camera? My film camera, it’s a lomography LC-wide.

Where do you like to photograph in the Winter? It’s the middle of summer for me in Cape Town right now, so the beach I suppose. Although, I prefer shooting on the beach in Winter. White sand and grey sky and nobody around, that’s when the fun starts. My favourite film photos happened in the mist on an empty beach in winter.

What’s your favourite piece of Winter clothing? Jerseys. Big patterned thrifted jerseys, layered on top of each other.

Mimi Foundation: If Only For A Second

By December 12, 2013 DIY & Lifestyle

I believe if this is my blog, that I can talk about what I want with in reason… even if it isn’t directly ‘fashion’ related. I love inspiring things, I love that feeling of just being like ‘Awww’ or ‘That’s amazing’, well I have something for you that hopefully should make you feel that way! It is slightly fashion related, in a way but I hope you like it no matter what it is about!

I love this one because it is very theatrical and reminds me of Meadham Kirchoff a lot. I love it so much! Plus, Katy (the lovely lady)’s expression is brilliant! That is a 100% natural too as it was taken just as she opened her eyes! Brilliant! 😀
mimi foundation if only for a second project cancer charitiesAriane is this lady’s name! Look at that hair? That is like crazily cool. I think the blue suits her! Best reaction of the lot, she’s just like *sassy hm-hm-hmmm*

The Mimi Foundation is a foundation for cancer patients, but not just for when they are in Hospital. Mimi help out by giving the patients courage and strength to keep on going through the struggle. The foundation got 20 people who suffered from cancer, and gave them a make-over (which, I think are brilliantly hilarious). They were then seated in front of a one way mirror with a photographer behind, and even if they just forgot about their situation for one second their objective would be completed. I absolutely love some of their responses, and the hair and make-up team really have done an excellent job.

mimi foundation if only for a second project cancer charitiesFabienne reminds me of an american lady who works at a diner. The hair, the bow… retro and kitsch. Brownie points for the amazing reaction too! 😀
mimi foundation if only for a second project cancer charitiesBrigitte… 1 word. Sophistication. #enoughsaid (oh, also maybe a bit of Hairspray inspiration went into this look!) Look at that expression too… :Omimi foundation if only for a second project cancer charitiesJeannine… I LOVE the pink colour! I also love the curls and the blue earrings. A nice pop of pink and a trend setting colour.  Not the best of reactions, but still brilliant!

You can buy the book from The Mimi Foundation, and 100% of the money goes towards helping other cancer patients just like these lovely bunch! I really think that is just such a nice idea and even if you don’t know somebody suffering with the same thing, I think you could do it for whatever worry somebody might live with! It just seems like such a fun thing to do to make somebody feel special and ‘care free’, if only for one second. Make sure to go over and give there Facebook page a ‘Like‘ because I think they really do deserve the support!

I know this isn’t a typical blog post for me, but I just loved the video and the pictures that I just had to share it with you! What do you think? Which is your favourite make-over?

My Style: When She Was 22*

By November 21, 2013 DIY & Lifestyle, My Style

Hi hi! Today is another edition of My Style, but with a little twist! Read on to see a pretty cool little thing from a certain App brand! *cough* Shuttersong *cough*… 😉

my style ootd fashion blog teen fashion shuttersong ios app photography app my style ootd fashion blog teen fashion shuttersong ios app photography appWhat I Wore: Black Fluffy Jumper £10.00 (Primark), Denim Dungarees (Jumble Sale), Tartan Check Scarf (Second Hand), Tiny Heart Necklace (Girl Talk – the one with TDP in it! 😉 ), Dr Martens (Jumble Sale) & Mermaid Logo Watch (Shuttersong)*

I know this is a weird way to start, but do I look like a deranged elf? I always think I do…? Okay, umm… back to normal… This outfit nice and warm and cosy, and because it has the different textures (fluff and denim), I think it makes it more ‘fashion-y’ and all that jazz. I also like how the denim and the scarf a nice pops of colour against my jumper, so it isn’t too dark and gloomy. It was especially cold when I took these photos, and walking around Toulouse is quite a trek, so I was freezing! Darn you Winter! Ooh ooh! I’m wearing my little heart necklace I got in my Girl Talk magazine (when I was in it), and it is now my lucky necklace, and reminds me of my proud moments 🙂 – Whilst taking these pictures, I realised how embarrassing it is when you take them in public!

Now, you might be wondering, ‘Tolly, why is there an orange dot on that picture?’ well, let me introduce you to Shuttersong! Shuttersong is basically an App which is available for iOS users (iPhone/iPad), where you basically, add music, or a recording on top of the image! I think it is really cute because you could have a picture of you blowing out your candles, then Happy Birthday on top! The App is FREE which means you should totally go and try it out! Visit the App Store and click the download button! On to the watch though… I didn’t own any black, or simple leather watches until this one arrived, and I am so glad I have it! It goes with most things and is the perfect of sizes! I really do like it a lot! It has the Shuttersong Mermaid in the centre, which I have to say, is rather cute! I also like how it has a silver middle, and no numbers because it makes it even more versatile and plain. Plus, it’s real leather, so hopefully it should last quite a long time before anything needs to be replaced!

my style ootd fashion blog teen fashion shuttersong ios app photography app my style ootd fashion blog teen fashion shuttersong ios app photography appSome random pictures I know, but heck, why can I not put my photography on my own blog? If you are wondering, the first image is of some hammers… from the Air Bus museum (yup, that really makes sense), but I thought the focus was quite nice. Then the second one is of some buildings (obviously), and after reading Islaay’s post, I have been obsessed with the way buildings look, and I tried to do some of my own! What do ya’ think?

(This post contains a sponsored image. I may have been paid or gifted by Shuttersong to publish the image. All opinions are 100% honest, as always. You can read my full disclaimer here.)

A/W Look Book with Peacocks*

By November 12, 2013 My Style

WOW, long time no… read? Ha. I’m sorry I’ve been away for a few more days than usual, but firstly, my brain decided to empty itself (not literally) and I simply couldn’t think of any blog posts, and then yesterday, it decided to explode into the worst headache 🙁 So today, I went out in the cold (my toes were numb) to shoot my Look Book! I’m sorry it’s not tip top’, but I’ve never done one before and it’s harder than you think! Okay, this very long intro should probably stop, so um… enjoy!

peacocks girls clothing teen fashion a/w look book What I Wore: Multicolour Chunky Knit Beanie (Primark), Love Me Batwing T-Shirt £7.00 (Peacocks)*, Petticoat Tutu £20.00 (M&S) & Chelsea Boots (Jumble Sale)

My favourite outfit at the moment! I splurged on this petticoat tutu skirt in England, and when this cute slogan top arrived, I knew I had to pair the two together. The top is slightly bat winged, but is really really comfortable. In my opinion pastels in the winter are just perfect, especially when it’s tulle – you know my love for tulle! I also adore this beanie which was a right bargain!

peacocks girls clothing teen fashion a/w look book What I Wore: Fluffy Jumper £10.00 (Primark), Blue & Black Long Sleeve Maxi Dress £10.00 (Peacocks)*, Floral Headband £10.00 (ASOS) & Dr Martens €30.00 (Jumble Sale)

Again, this look is one of my favourites for A/W. It’s a little bit grunge-y, but a little bit cute, and definitely warm. I’m really happy with the maxi dress because it has long sleeves, and it’s just the right length! Not many teen collections cater for maxi dresses! The fluffy jumper adds a little sumin’ sumin’ with the texture.

peacocks girls clothing teen fashion a/w look book What I Wore: White Blouse (Next), Tartan Check Scarf 0.65c (2nd Hand Shop), Red and Monochrome Tartan Check Skater Skirt £7.00 (Peacocks)& Chelsea Boots (Jumble Sale)

I think this outfit is really cute and British, and nice for those days where it isn’t too cold, but not too warm. I think you could dress it up with a leather jacket and chunky boots. This skirt is perfect for all seasons too! Who said you can’t wear tartan in summer?! Plus, how amazing is my 65 cent scarf? Bargain!

peacocks girls clothing teen fashion a/w look book What I Wore: White Shirt (M&S), Sparkly Blue Bow £8.00 (Prairie Charms)*, Fluffy Jumper £10.00 (Primark), Black & Grey Leopard Print Skater Skirt £7.00 (Peacocks)*, Dr Martens €30.00 (Jumble Sale)

Come on, look at that bow?! Cuteeee! ^.^ Haha! I added the sparkly bow just to jazz it up a bit more – top tip: use hair bows as faux bow ties! – but yeah it’s just a really simple, comfy outfit. I actually really like the skirt. It’s simple, but because the print is in a plain colour combination, it can be worn in different ways. Gahh, the fluffy jumper is so snug!

I hope you enjoyed my first ever Look Book! I hope I did it okay?… I also have 3 other pieces from the Teen Collection at Peacocks which I hope to shoot (again – the pictures weren’t the best!) soon. Shout out to Peacocks though! I am so grateful for all of the support they have given to my blog! I never knew I would be collaborating with a high street brand which is in most UK towns! 😀 Please leave me a comment if you wish!

Kimi & Me Guest Post: Textures

Today’s guest post is by the lovely Christina at Kimi & Me, where she’ll be talking about all things Texture, with a small little thing by moi, too! 😉

kimi & me fashion lifestyle blog guest blog fashion textures trend aw 131: Velvet High Neck Top (ASOS)//2: Check Mesh Top (New Look)//3: Fluffy Crop Jumper (Topshop)

Christina: I really love the fluffy jumpers and cardigans in Primark at the moment, they have become a very popular buy. So much so they have sold out in the Primark near me. It is the perfect texture for A/W, so soft and cosy to wear. Topshop also offer plenty of textured knits (I have my eye on a pink fluffy top). I would also love a faux leather skirt, as it would be such a fun staple piece to style. My favourite item (above), is the velvet check top from asos. The velvety fabric, and colours are such a lovely combination, and this top would be ideal for those Christmas parties (not long til it’s that time of year!)

Tolly: My favourite item from above has go to be the mesh top! As you all know, I love me some Tulle and mesh, so this is definitely a nice piece in my opinion! Subtle but eye catching. Really nice for A/W 🙂

Christina: Mixing/layering textures can give an outfit a whole new look, and feel. When it starts to get cold out, I love to layer different prints and fabric together, even if it’s just adding a scarf/stole.

Tolly: I love mixing textures, and Topshop have got it spot on! My favourite has got to be the quilted top! I know there is a similar one in Primark, so I’m keeping my eyes open for it!
