Getting Back Into YouTube | New Videos

By January 23, 2015 YouTube

Scary times people! I’m back on that thing called YouTube… eep! One of my New Year’s Resolutions was to start filming videos again, because for some reason, you guys actually seem to like them?! Yeah, I know… so without further a-do, come and watch me gabble about nothing and answer a few questions that I got asked on Twitter & Instagram. Enjoy!

~ SUBSCRIBE ~

This video is simply just me telling you that I’m filming videos again… in a faux fur pastel gilet. Yup. No, I should probably take this a bit more seriously… I genuinely want to get back into YouTube. I just find it really hard to actually think up ideas. With blogging, you write and take pictures and you let that do the talking, but with YouTube, you have to sit down and make words come out of your mouth without sounding like any other ‘vlogger’. I don’t really want to do tags, although I have done them in the past… and with blogging as well, I know that artsy type videos take a long time. So, I’m just winging it basically. We’ll see what happens. Yeah?

~ SUBSCRIBE ~

For my second video of the year, I decided to film a bit of a Q&A session. I don’t know whether it’s very interesting, but I thought it would be an easy way to quick off the year, non? Thank you for the questions by the way! If you really want to know what goes on, I tell you where my dream place to live is, why I have all of those black and white logos in my sidebar (features, innit’) and whether I prefer summer or winter. Enjoy!

So erm… yeah! I should actually have a new video really soon (aka, in my next blog post) so if you want to see that before anyone else, then make sure you subscribe… oh and click the like button, leave a comment and share it with all of your friends (I jest)… 🙂 I apologise for the sarcasm in this post but as you can probably tell I’m slightly nervous about this whole video thing…

A-Z Fashion Guide: Brick Lane

By January 21, 2015 A-Z Fashion

You may have noticed that I’ve decided to stop my Series Sunday schedule. It really hasn’t been working out for me, and it means I can blog much more freely without it, but do not fear! The series I posted on Sundays will still be around, just like my A-Z Fashion Guide! Today I will be talking about a few things to do in Brick Lane, and why I think it deserves to be in my guide… and yes, all puns to do with ‘lanes’ are in italics…

A-Z Fashion Guide - Things To Do on Brick Lane

For the third and final instalment of letter ‘B’ in my A-Z Fashion Guide, I decided to go down a different route and learn a bit more about Brick Lane. Upon research, I didn’t actually find that much about it’s connection with fashion, but in my opinion it is notorious for it’s stylish streets.

I think most importantly, it’s known for it’s vintage shops and markets. Not only are they a treasure trove for those who love their clothes, but it’s also the perfect place for street style photographers to get dozens of shots. With it’s bundles of tattered Dr Martens and flannel shirts piled upon piles.

Brick Lane maybe more commonly known for it’s culture and food markets, which to me plays an important role in to why I’ve included it into my guide. The different styles and ethnicity all merge together, and I think that’s what fashion is all about. Designs and trends from all different walks of life.

~ GET EXPLORING ~

I’ve put together a little map of the area and have included a few recommended hot spots for vintage shopping. I can’t say that I’ve been to all of these, but I know by social media what is good and what is not. Here’s a few mini reviews for you:

BOXPARK – This place is pretty cool. It’s made up of shipping containers and is full to the brim of pop-up shops. It has brands from GAP to MOO (yeah, for that business card shopping spree you’ve been dying to go on…), and even has a place to get a bite to eat. A cool photography opportunity too. Who can resist corrugated iron?

Rokit Vintage I’ve heard a lot about Rokit online, and upon close inspection of their website, all sounds well and good. They’ve got loads of unique and one off items that you wouldn’t get anywhere else, so it’s worth checking out… and if you can’t get there by foot, check out their website.

The Vintage Market – This is the bomb.com, and the hive of Brick Lane’s fashionistas. Full to the brim of colourful clothes and accessories. It’s underground and has a pretty darn cool vibe to it. Come with a few coins, or plenty. A good experience nonetheless.

What do you think of Brick Lane? Know any interesting facts? Let me know in the comments!

(As always, you can find all image sources on my Pinterest.)

6 Important Blogging FAQs, Answered

By January 18, 2015 General

Every week my inbox is bound to receive a question related to blogging, and it’s hard to answer every single one individually, so I’ve decided today is the day that I shall answer them all, and for good! Obviously some of you might have different questions, but I know that these are frequently asked ones, so it should help the majority of you, whether you have a blog already, or you have only just started. Don’t forget to leave me any questions in the comments too, I will try and answer them all for you!

Blogging FAQs - How To Start A Blog

What is the best blogging platform?

In my opinion this is very personal. I’ve only ever tried WordPress because that is what my family has always used. I’ve tried Blogger when working on other people’s blogs, and it’s just too dated and fiddly for me. WordPress has such a nice interface! Definitely look up what would work best for you, I’ve also heard that Squarespace is really good too.

How do I get more views and readers?

This is probably the most common question from newer and older bloggers. There really is no simple answer, and without going off on a tangent, you must not forget that views don’t mean everything. Social media, SEO and advertising are three basic and amazing ways to get those readers in, so definitely have a Google search on those topics.

Do I need a fancy camera?

No! You definitely don’t. The latest smart phones and basic digital cameras all do the job perfectly. DSLRs are expensive and are not for everyone. I actually did a post all about this topic so definitely check it out. Don’t go splashing the cash without some research! Oh and for all those asking, I use the Nikon D3200 with the 35mm 1:1.8G DX lens!

Blogging FAQs - How To Start A Blog(Recognise this ‘lens’? It’s the mug from my Christmas wishlist. SO COOL! Also, follow me on Instagram, yeah?)

How many times a week should I publish a blog post?

This is really up to you, and when your schedule says you can. Things like school, work and family are much more important so don’t let blogging take over other aspects of your life. Perhaps try and blog at least 2-3 times a week, and see if you want to increase or decrease that amount. You’ll find out what works best sooner or later.

How can I get brands to work with me?

Another answer which involves the words ‘don’t worry’, because you shouldn’t. When I started blogging I had absolutely no clue that bloggers could be sent things to review, or just generally work with them. But I know for some older bloggers, still not working with brands can be annoying if you have lots of ideas in your head.

Although some people may disagree, do you know why brands put Press and PR emails on their sites? So bloggers and members of the media can contact them. So many more brands are opening up to bloggers, so if you really want, send a polite and inviting email to them and introduce your blog and idea. If you’re waiting for brands to contact you, then it may just be that your blog still needs to develop.

Brands use bloggers as a form of advertising, so it’s very rare that they will send you something just as a ‘gift’, so don’t be sad if nothing comes. Wait until those readers are rolling in (this can take 2 months, or 2 years), and you’ll see brands rolling in too.

What on earth is HTML?

Coding! It’s the magical stuff that puts together quite a lot of your blog. There is also CSS which puts together most of the structure and design of your blog. I would probably recommend learning some if you have the time. Even if you just learn the basics like how to center an image through HTML tags, or how to change a HEX number in your CSS. It’s really simple stuff that can be vital to the blogging process. If you need some extra help, check out Quack HTML. I’ve found it super handy!

P.S There is a new video going up (or already up) on my YouTube channel… yeah only took me since last summer!

Fashion Films | Coach, Gucci & i-D

By January 15, 2015 Fashion

I’m a sucker for a good fashion film. It’s become one of my favourite things to do; curl up with a hot cup of tea and binge watch videos from pretty dresses to learning a new language… in pretty dresses. So, I thought I would round up a few of my favourite recent discoveries below. They’re all pretty short fashion films, so if you’ve got half a cup of tea left, that will probably do the job nicely. Enjoy!

Gucci – “Special Delivery”

Meant for the Christmas/Holiday period, this one is a short story of a young lady who receives a special delivery. She ‘accidentally’ trips over and Gucci surprises spill out over the floor. It’s a fun little one, perhaps a bit more like an advertisement, but the acting in it makes it more enjoyable. It was the perfect opportunity to discover a new band, Is Tropical; their song Dancing Anymore is played throughout. If you like pastel, you’ll love this one.

i-D Magazine: “How to Speak Polish with Ola Rudnicka”

A fashion film with a spark of creativity. i-D currently have a series running which is ‘How to Speak [insert language here] with [insert person in the fashion industry]’, and this is a pretty cool episode of it. It’s modern, clear, quirky and leaves you feeling a bit confused. To be quite honest the only word I understood was bread… I loved the looks involved though, especially that transparent number. Fresh, fun and full of inspiration. Let me know what you thought of it!

i-D Magazine: “Christmas Dinner”

Okay, another one meant more for the Christmas period, but I really quite like this one. It’s a Christmas dinner based around what certain fashion insiders (some are designers, some models etc) feel towards the festive holiday. Whether it be what they want under their tree, or what they would usually eat. It’s extremely creative and I love the way it is put together. Plus, who doesn’t love a kitten thrown in their too?

Coach: “Winter 2014 #CoachDreamers”

To leave yourself in a daze, watch this one, it’s full of silky montages and summery feeling nostalgia, it’s hardly the type of film you’d expect for the A/W season, but I like it nonetheless. There are also side videos for each artist in the main film (I believe they’re all artists, or at least involved with the ‘creative arts’). I prefer films like this though, they have more depth to them. They don’t just feel like a way to show the latest collection, they feel a bit more artistic and like they have a real vision…

So there we have it! Let me know which was your favourite in the comments, and if you have any recommendations for fashion films to watch 🙂 Don’t forget that you still have time to not only fill out my reader survey, but also to vote for some content…

Changing With The Seasons | The Vote

By January 11, 2015 Changing With The Seasons

Over the Christmas period, I came up with a new series idea for this little ol’ blog, and I’m thinking you’re going to love it! It involves your favourite kind of post (aka. outfit/My Style), but first I need your help. Read on to see what I’m talking about…

CWTS Textures

The idea is, that I will take 1 item of clothing, (whether it be a top, skirt or even a faux fur gilet), and style it over the course of 8 months to go along with the seasons. I thought it would be a really cool idea not only to help you guys gain some style inspiration, but also for me to remember to shop my wardrobe from time to time and work out new and exciting ways to dress up. The schedule will work like this…

WINTER: January & February // SPRING: April & May // SUMMER: July & August // AUTUMN: October & November

So in all of the listed months, there will be an outfit styling the set item of clothing. What d’ya think? Are you game? This is the part where I need your help. I need YOU to vote for the item of clothing. Now, you haven’t got long to do this because I need to get the first installment up, so if you want to be part of this whole series, you’ll have to get your vote in super quick! All you have to do is scroll down and look at each item, think about which you would like me to style, (whether it be for inspiration or just for pretty pictures), and vote for the item of your choosing, using the button below it. The most voted for item will be styled 8 times… Simples!

Changing With The Seasons Stripey Top Boden Johnnie B

Voting is now closed! Here’s the first installment.

A super simple piece which is super versatile and works well in lots of different styles. A safe option, but do you need some inspiration? Vote for it if you’re on a bit of a stripey top low. I love them, so I wouldn’t mind too much! It’s from Johnnie B at Boden*… but seeing as I own a couple of different ones, you may see slightly different ones throughout the series.

Changing With The Seasons Tutu Marks & Spencer

Voting is now closed! Here’s the first installment.

A skirt with something special! I’ve styled this before and it’s pretty darn cool. If you like pastels than I’d vote for this. Step out of your comfort zone and try something new, yeah? It’s from Marks & Spencer.

Changing With The Seasons Skater Skirt H&M

Voting is now closed! Here’s the first installment.

Another basic item but can be worked into so many different styles and vibes. I love this for grunge filled outfits. Perfect for the summer season… get voting! It’s from H&M.

Changing With The Seasons Pastel Gilet Choies

Voting is now closed! Here’s the first installment.

A new addition to my wardrobe, so styling this up would be perfect for me! Love how fluffy and soft it is too… IT’S SO FLUFFY! If you like Despicable Me, vote in… I have minion socks to match! It’s from Choies.

So that’s it! Get voting! If you want to be the first to find out which item has been voted the most, then give me a follow on Twitter. The first Changing With The Seasons post will be up towards the end of the month! Exciting… speak soon!

(Although there is a PR sample within this post, the idea was totally original and I was not asked to include it. Read my full PR disclaimer here.)

My Style: Super Khaki, Super Crazy*

By January 7, 2015 My Style

YAY! The first outfit post of the year, and a slightly ‘not so Tolly’ outfit. I’ve been feeling a lot of different vibes at the moment, so if somebody were to ask me, “How do you define your style?”, the answer would most probably be… ‘I have absolutely no idea.’ But hey, that’s the fun of being my age right? ‘Finding out who you are’ and all that stuff. Anyway, if you want to know what on earth I’m talking about, scroll on down… (P.S Can we note that all my pictures are in focus?! It’s all down to Phillis.)

WHAT I WORE: Fluffy Pink Jumper (H&M) // Super Glitter Crop Top £12.00 (ASOS) // Fallen Star Pleated Midi Skirt £24.00 (ASOS) // Violet Metallic Dr Martens (Mastershoe)* // Swallow Ear Cuff (ASOS – Old)

Ever since Lily (LLYMLRS) posted a certain outfit on her blog/instagram – my memory is terrible, I can’t remember what she was wearing or where it was put up – I have been in love with not only pleated midi skirts but also, khaki. I’ve always been a colour girl, and I still am at heart, but for some reason I am drawn to this mushy green colour that should look repulsive, but somehow, looks absolutely fabulous! It goes along with the new ‘army/utility’ trend, with all the dungarees and cute baggy blouses… which I love! So mix that with my new found love of midi skirts (especially pleated ones), and you’re onto a winner!

I picked up this sparkly number on ASOS, and I love it! It’s definitely a lot more green in real life, so take that into account if you fancy the look of it!

Another thing I picked up from ASOS, was this super cute (see what I did there) crop top! I didn’t actually know it was a crop top, but I like it none the less. I’m a big fan of the racer back style, and also a huge fan of all thinks sparkly, so it was a no brainer! I can’t wait to style it up in the summer! I think with baggy jumpers, it’s always nice to have a sneaky bit of something else popping through, so it was a good excuse to pop it underneath! Speaking of baggy jumpers, I got this pink one as a Christmas present (thanks Father Christmas Mama Posh!) and although it’s not something I would personally pick out, I like the texture and it goes perfectly well with this whole khaki thing.

Last but not least… accessories! I paired a few pieces of jewelry which I have had tucked away, and they worked wonderfully. The ear cuff was my first ever ASOS purchase (I think it was £2.50… I had to buy something back then), and although it seems my family despise of it, I rather like it! I’m becoming more open to mixing metal tones ya’ see! And as for the ring, goodness know’s where it’s from! I have an inkling it’s an old Primark piece, but I could be wrong. My feet are of course covered by my magnificent pair of Dr Martens which are the most beautiful things I own! *heart eyes emoji*

Are you a bit puzzled as to what your style is at the moment? Do you love a bit of khaki? Let me know in the comments… and if you haven’t already make sure you fill out my reader survey here!

Let's Get to Know Each Other - Reader Survey 2015

You are obviously not obliged to fill it in, but if you want to, it would help me a lot! I just want to get to know a bit more about you guys seeing as you know a lot about me. Take it as a nice way to get to know each other. You don’t have to tell me where you live or anything, and I’m not even asking for your email, so there is no risk of spam! Just relax and take a minute or two to fill it in! I will display the results in a fancy little infographic at the end of this month!

This survey is now closed. Report back here soon to find out the results…

Thanks so much for filling it in if you did! It’s a big help, and I can’t wait to see what things we like and dislike… we might be really alike! 🙂

New Year’s Resolutions 2015 | Farewell 2014

By January 1, 2015 General

It is officially 2015… scary! This can only mean one thing! It’s time to do a good ol’ bit of soppy reflection and share with you my New Year’s resolutions. I never really used to do them, but after last year (2014… it went way too quick), I have decided to carry on setting goals, however big or small. So, let’s get on with it…

New Year's Resolutions 2015

~ REFLECTION ~

2014 was pretty darn good. At the start of the year I had some big dreams and ambitions, and I am so happy to say that I am pretty sure that I achieved every single one… we’ll exclude the personal ones for now… 😛

Firstly I decided to set myself a goal of working with brands on product collaborations and by golly gosh was that a big thing to write down. I was in a recent Twitter chat about New Year’s resolutions, and I think somebody was actually quite shocked that I managed to do it without a plan of action. But here I am now with a professional design contract with a brand (Mooi en Lief). Sometime soon I will have a collection of socks and tights with my name on them. Pretty darn cool. Read more about that here if you are interested!

Next up I really wanted to do some more fashion design work. I’m not going  to say I have done that fully, but I would say it probably ties in with my previous goal. I have learnt quite a lot on what it takes to create a collection, and am pretty proud of that. I have a whole portfolio book full of designs, research and goodness know’s what that I didn’t even know you had to do! Stepping stones can be as big as you want them to be.

Create unique and interesting blog topics was my final goal, and I think this is down to you guys to judge. I would say I have achieved it. I think my posts have generally got better as I have grown. For me, the second half of 2014 was probably full of some of my best ever content, and I am not sorry, at all for saying that. Plus, look at my blog now. All professional with a swanky new design and layout… 🙂 YAY! You can read some of my favourite posts of last year, here!

New Year's Resolutions 2015

~ RESOLUTIONS ~

I’m still not certain what I want to achieve this year. I feel like it will be a proper crack down year where I’ll just be doing a lot of stuff. Who knows what that stuff maybe, but let’s just hope it’s good. I obviously want my Mooi en Lief by Tolly Dolly Posh collaboration to go down well, and for you guys to love it, but other than that I’m okay with everything now. If my blog carries on growing then that’s brilliant! If I keep learning new things then that’s fantastic!

But to make some of you happy and to write down a proper bloggy goal, I think I’d like to work with brands for a longer time than just the odd post. Because brands, PRs and designers have set campaigns and schedules to work alongside, it’s really hard to work with them on different projects all the time. I’d love to collaborate with some of my favourites in different ways whether it be on my blog or off. I want to really work with people and gain experience. So there, there’s a goal for you! Oh and I also want to get back on that thing called YouTube. Yeah… I’m working on it!

Farewell 2014. You were a good year, but let’s see if 2015 can be even better!
LET’S DO THIS.

Scrap Social #3 – Setting Themes & Matching Pages

By December 21, 2014 Scrap Social

If you didn’t catch my last post (read it here), you won’t know that over this Christmas period, I won’t be blogging as much, so there will only be a post up every Sunday (not for long though, just until the new year!). So, seeing as series posts go up on a Sunday, I have a new Scrap Social post! You guys love them, you seriously do! Enjoy…

setting themes in scrapbooks scrap social

setting themes in scrapbooks scrap social

So as you can tell from the title of this post, I’ve been (accidentally) matching pages and creating themes… for some odd reason! This is a big example, all the colours match! I actually printed out things for this page for the first time. I just really liked the whole look of the left page. It reminds me of some 90’s teen movie or something. The illustration was from a magazine, and I’m so glad I cut it out! The other page is also really random… my mum was also scrapbooking at the time, so I borrowed some of her inks to add to this random lady covered in face paint. It now looks like she is puking paint, but I really like the outcome looking at it now! What d’ya think? Yay or Nay to ink?

setting themes in scrapbooks scrap social

Do excuse the awful air bubbles in that GIF! I hate working with thin floppy magazines… ew! Anyway… again these four pages all match in some way?! I love the idea I had for the top 2 pages. They’re like a bunch of pieces from your mum’s drawer… classic books, perfumes, hand creams from years ago, and pressed flowers. The colours all match and they have a really nice fresh aesthetic to them. The bottom page was when I was looking for blog photography inspiration. Fashion editorials have been my biggest ‘INSPO’ so, I decided to pop them in! Obviously a GIF was obligatory with the whole flip down business.

Okay these pages definitely don’t match altogether, but in pairs they do! The top two are again, blog inspiration, so just some cut outs and full pages. The bottom two are actually some of my favourites! I love the colours and simplicity of each page. The girl in the left page has such a strong face and character, I couldn’t not use her! My mum’s old scrapbook had similar style pages, so it was a big inspiration for when I put it together (let me know if you want to see her old one in a Guest Scrap Social!). The right page is basically a shrine for Chanel… aw, so pretty. I would probably die with excitement if those trainers were mine… one day, one day!

setting themes in scrapbooks scrap social

Ah two of my favourite things… Suki Waterhouse and McDonalds… I jest, I jest! Recently though, Suki Waterhouse has come to my attention and has become my new girl crush. Ergh, her hair, her style… basically just… SUKI! So I printed out some blue turquoise stone and bordered it around some shots of her. The final page was just simply added because of the awesome black and white editorial, and the Moschino bag… another sigh because I genuinely want that bag, SO. MUCH. Again, I printed out some McDonalds food, and stuck it down, outlining them with my trusty biro pen. I really like the outcome of this page, I think I might try this method again!

Let me know what you think of this update! There will sure be another Scrap Social post sometime soon, and maybe even another Guest Scrap Social, so stay tuned.
