How To Keep Your Creative Juices Flowing by Mama Posh

By February 11, 2015 DIY & Lifestyle

Hello everyone! Do you remember a while back, I got Papa Posh (aka. my dad) to write a lil’ post for me? Well, you guys seemed to really like that, so today I have dragged in Mama Posh (can you guess who she is?!) to do one too! I’m hoping to get most of my family members to write a post each, so it should be fun! Today Mama Posh is going to speaking all about how to stay creative. We’re a pretty creative family, so hopefully this will help, especially for you fellow bloggers 🙂 Take it away Mama Posh…

how to stay creative blogging art

Even on your bad days you can always be creative! Have you ever got up in the morning and thought, ‘I am so bored, I cannot think of what to blog, or what to do today?’. As a designer myself, I sometimes find annoying life problems can be discouraging and depressing, and find that trying to brainstorm just isn’t enough – after all, I’m short on inspiration, brainstorming isn’t going to turn up much! So today I thought I would jot down some tips for you…

Watch a movie…

Feeling really down and totally uninspired? Watch a good movie, buy some good old fashioned sweets, get a big warm blanket, snuggle down and enjoy. You will find little inspiring thoughts will spring to mind and will usually stay with you, so you can use them at a later time. It’s often good to re-cleanse your mind and just relax.

Look, look and look again…

Remember to look at your surroundings. Many of us go through our day through blinkered eyes; try to find inspiration in everything you see. I recommend cutting a small hole in a piece of paper, pop it in your pocket and when you are alone, on a journey or walking, take this paper and look through it at the world around you, and guess what? You will see everything in a totally new light!

Become a scribbler…

Always have something to write with, even in the most absurd of places! Take a pen and paper, any scrap will do, and draw and write about everything you see, wherever you go. Write on tickets, wrappers, cans, whatever you can scribble on! Keep all of these little notes in a scrapbook or journal to flick through from time to time.

how to stay creative blogging art

Be curious…

Creative people are insatiably curious. Like me, curious people ask so many questions! Look at the world around you and always want to ask why? How? Expose yourself to new experiences, new sensations and states of mind and this openness will significantly boost your creative output.

People watch… (in a non-creepy way)…

I am always looking, watching… (but not creepily staring I will just add, before you think I am some sort of weirdo!) Creative types often love to people watch, and it can be a great way to generate some fantastic ideas this way! Look at what people around you are wearing, what they are doing and how they portray yourself. Pin point different characters that interest you.

“Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn’t really do it, they just saw something. It seemed obvious to them after a while. That’s because they were able to connect experiences they’ve had and synthesize new things.” – Steve Jobs.

This is one of my favourite quotes by Steve Jobs. To keep those creative juices flowing, you have to surround yourself with creativity. That doesn’t mean you have to live in a creative city, or know other artists… it means you have to search for the creativity around you. Keep looking, and you’ll find that spark once again.

Thank you so much for writing Mama Posh! I hope this helped some of you and that your creative juices will come flowing straight back for all your blogging needs. Speak soon!

Fashion Films | Coach, Gucci & i-D

By January 15, 2015 Fashion

I’m a sucker for a good fashion film. It’s become one of my favourite things to do; curl up with a hot cup of tea and binge watch videos from pretty dresses to learning a new language… in pretty dresses. So, I thought I would round up a few of my favourite recent discoveries below. They’re all pretty short fashion films, so if you’ve got half a cup of tea left, that will probably do the job nicely. Enjoy!

Gucci – “Special Delivery”

Meant for the Christmas/Holiday period, this one is a short story of a young lady who receives a special delivery. She ‘accidentally’ trips over and Gucci surprises spill out over the floor. It’s a fun little one, perhaps a bit more like an advertisement, but the acting in it makes it more enjoyable. It was the perfect opportunity to discover a new band, Is Tropical; their song Dancing Anymore is played throughout. If you like pastel, you’ll love this one.

i-D Magazine: “How to Speak Polish with Ola Rudnicka”

A fashion film with a spark of creativity. i-D currently have a series running which is ‘How to Speak [insert language here] with [insert person in the fashion industry]’, and this is a pretty cool episode of it. It’s modern, clear, quirky and leaves you feeling a bit confused. To be quite honest the only word I understood was bread… I loved the looks involved though, especially that transparent number. Fresh, fun and full of inspiration. Let me know what you thought of it!

i-D Magazine: “Christmas Dinner”

Okay, another one meant more for the Christmas period, but I really quite like this one. It’s a Christmas dinner based around what certain fashion insiders (some are designers, some models etc) feel towards the festive holiday. Whether it be what they want under their tree, or what they would usually eat. It’s extremely creative and I love the way it is put together. Plus, who doesn’t love a kitten thrown in their too?

Coach: “Winter 2014 #CoachDreamers”

To leave yourself in a daze, watch this one, it’s full of silky montages and summery feeling nostalgia, it’s hardly the type of film you’d expect for the A/W season, but I like it nonetheless. There are also side videos for each artist in the main film (I believe they’re all artists, or at least involved with the ‘creative arts’). I prefer films like this though, they have more depth to them. They don’t just feel like a way to show the latest collection, they feel a bit more artistic and like they have a real vision…

So there we have it! Let me know which was your favourite in the comments, and if you have any recommendations for fashion films to watch 🙂 Don’t forget that you still have time to not only fill out my reader survey, but also to vote for some content…

A-Z Fashion Guide: Basque

By May 29, 2014 A-Z Fashion

Long time no see my little friend, A-Z Fashion Guide? Sorry, I’ve been a busy bee with other posts but it’s back! You seemed to like this series (I think…. :-/…), so I’m carrying it on! This is the 1st part of the ‘B’ section, so I guess we’ll just crack on, non?

a-z fashion guide basque 1

A ‘Basque’ is basically the proper name for a ‘Peplum’. It means an additional piece of fabric almost like a mini skirt, which has been added to a dress, jacket or blouse. Some people get confused between it and a ‘drop waist’ but usually a ‘Basque’ will be completely separate (still joined) and the dress will ‘continue’ under the added ‘Peplum’. The origin of the word ‘Basque’ comes from France, and the actual ‘Basque’ on a skirt also comes from France, and the ‘Basque’ people were the first people to wear the style in the Victorian times. In the era of the Victorians, it was more like a fitted piece of clothing which waistline was past the hips.

This style was most commonly used in lingerie around that time in things like corsets, but now in more modern times it is most commonly found on dresses. The ‘Basque’ or ‘Peplum’ is a flattering shape as it sort of conceals part of your torso and waist which makes your top half look a lot longer and slimmer. I’m not the biggest fan of this style but I think the style will always be popular as it does make for a nice silhouette.

a-z fashion guide basque 2The best example of the ‘Basque’ I can find being used by a designer is from the Chanel A/W 2011 collection. It’s not what I call the nicest of collections, but it’s definitely a good representation of the style. In the collection, there is the classic Chanel jacket, with an added ‘Peplum’, decorative embellishments (more on Applique here!), and bright pops of colour (sorry, that phrase has to get in a post somewhere). Nice, just not my taste. I much prefer the SS14 Haute Couture collection… *love heart eyes emoji*

a-z fashion guide basque 3RIVER ISLAND DRESS//MISS SELFRIDGE TOP//ASOS DRESS

These are three pieces that I love featuring the ‘Basque’ style. I love how the River Island Dress has the 3D flowers, and the bright colours are just gorgeous. The added ‘Basque’ isn’t too obvious either, it makes the whole piece look a lot more structured… shame it’s a tad on the pricey side though… must definitely be worth it! Let’s talk about the top though… ohh yes! I’m not sure you can really have a ‘drop hem’ crop top, so I’m counting this. The print is dreamy, the style is dreamy, ohh just too much dreamy-ness! But, that white dress… YES! I love the cami style scuba neck, and the length… plus the fabric is embossed so it adds that whole extra dimension of sophistication. It’s not something I would usually go for, but I LOVE it! Love love love… well I love all 3 pieces and I wish I owned them all!

Makie X Tolly Dolly Posh Product Collaboration

By May 12, 2014 Fashion, My Style

This post is just too exciting in many ways. I’m sorry I haven’t blogged in a week (terrible blogger), but I’ve been waiting for parcels etc etc, but this post should definitely make up for it! First of all, thank you SO much if you nominated my blog in the Company Magazine Blog Awards because… *drum roll* we’ve been shortlisted for the 2nd year! It would be awesome if you could click here to vote for me! I’m on Tab 8 under Best Teen Style Blog 😀 Another exciting thing is that my soft boxes finally arrived! This is the first blog post using them 😀 Anyway, this post is exciting in itself…

You may remember at the beginning of this year, I did a resolution post (read it here), where I said I wanted to a product collaboration with a brand. Well, let’s move down the line, 5 months later, and I’ve gone and done just that! The amazing people at Makie, a 3D printed toy brand from London, gave me and two other bloggers the chance to create our own outfit and have it sold on their shop. How cool?! It’s only small but I am absolutely thrilled to have been part of the project. I feel giddy with pride!

I love promoting innovative brands, and Makie is certainly one of them. 3D printing is something that will be a common household utility in the future, and all the dolls and accessories (excluding the outfits of course) are all printed from a 3D printer. I think it’s amazing! You can make your doll look like you, or whatever you want it to look like. They sell lots of different accessories, and now of course, the Teen Couture collection. 2 of my lovely blogging pals, Mia and Lexi, also have outfits which you should check out!

makie teen couture collection tolly dolly posh makie teen couture collection tolly dolly poshINCLUDED IN THE OUTFIT: TOP, SKIRT, PETTICOAT, YELLOW SHOES & FLOWER CROWN

As you know, I LOVE prints, so my design of course had to incorporate some! I decided on a full panel skirt with an additional petticoat, a yellow high neck, some winged high tops, and of course a floral crown! The prints are inspired by my current loves, including pineapples… obsessed with pineapples!  I also love yellow, so it seemed to right to have a matching top and shoes! I think the outfit really suits my personality and I hope other young girls like it too… or boys of course! It’s called ‘Posh Prints-ess’, because… well… prints!

makie teen couture collection tolly dolly poshmakie teen couture collection tolly dolly poshI’m going to treasure this forever. Although it is only a small piece, I would like to say it would be worth a lot in the future… perhaps? It’s my first ever product collaboration…. the first ever ‘X Tolly Dolly Posh’ design. I really hope you go ahead and treat yourself to one. Even if you don’t have a Makie doll, you could just keep it wrapped up and make yourself millions in the future… jokes, but you know what I mean! I wouldn’t be able to have these opportunities without your support, so thank you, I’m blessed 🙂 I really do hope you like it!

(This is not a sponsored post. Makie sent me the doll and outfit as a gift. I do not make any profit from the outfit being sold, currently. Read my full PR disclaimer here)

My Style: Blue Blue Pretty Pleats*

By May 4, 2014 My Style

Before I start this new My Style OOTD, I would just like to say how happy I am with my blog right now. I feel very excited about the content I am pushing out and what I have to come. The only thing I would say is that I would love if you guys could give some more feedback! I’d love to know if you enjoy my recent posts as much as I do! It would mean a lot. Thank you guys! Love you all 🙂 Exciting news too… I just purchased some soft box lights for YouTube and taking other kinds of images *gulps* 😀

my style ootd fashion blog sugarhill boutique rings and tings my style ootd fashion blog sugarhill boutique rings and tings my style ootd fashion blog sugarhill boutique rings and tings What I Wore: Pretty Pleat Blouse (Sugarhill Boutique)*, Pastel Blue Petticoat Tutu £20.00 (Marks & Spencer), SOLDIER Heels (ASOS), Squared Round Sunglasses (Topshop – Sold Out), Gold Camera Necklace (Gift – Don’t know where from!) & Wingspan Bird Ring £5.50 (Rings & Tings)*

As soon as this gorgeous (and sheer – the reason for the vest…) blouse from Sugarhill Boutique arrived, I knew I had to pair it with a light blue skirt. Originally I was going to opt for my ASOS pleated midi skirt, but it was a bit crinkled and I was in a hurry, so I threw on my tutu instead, and I am glad I did! To be honest, this outfit is slightly out of my comfort zone in a way… it’s very floaty but I think the way I accessorised it, makes it more me and a bit more funk-ay! The blouse isn’t just how it seems though… it has other secrets which I will mention later on 😉 Ooh ooh, I’m wearing my hair how I used to ages and ages ago! I went through a phase of wearing it like this every single day and I’m falling back in love with it!

my style ootd fashion blog sugarhill boutique rings and tings my style ootd fashion blog sugarhill boutique rings and tings I TOLD YOU IT HAD SECRETS! HOW GORGEOUS?!
It’s beautiful! I didn’t even realise it was pleated on the back until I took it out the packet. I think it just makes it even more amazing. It looks like a normal sheer blouse from the front (with a cute little heart pocket and matching top button), but then BOOM! A pleated back! As you’ll probably know from the amount of times I have said, I’m on a blouse high, and this is such a gorgeous addition. It could be worn in so many different ways, even more casually as the back really does most of the talking. I think when the weather perks up a bit more (saying that, it was beautiful today), I will have to invest in a bandeau because my vest really doesn’t make it look particularly amazing… 😉 Unfortunately I cannot wear a ‘sex-ay’ bra because um…. yup… *cries with laughter*

my style ootd fashion blog sugarhill boutique rings and tings my style ootd fashion blog sugarhill boutique rings and tings my style ootd fashion blog sugarhill boutique rings and tings

Let’s talk accessories shall we? My beautiful sister (who I can now officially ‘plug’ because she has her own blog – baby/mummy related) got me this little gold necklace a while back as a present, and I think it is so cute because it has a little camera on (i.e a refrence to my blawg), and it looks adorable with the gold heart button! This outfit was probably one of the first times I have mixed jewellery colours too! I’ve always thought that gold and silver would look funny together, but I think my ring actually compliments the whole look!

I ordered these awesome (and now sold out) Topshop sunglasses along with two other things (haul coming soon!), after a wish I wished for (ha) got actioned on Crowdwish! If you don’t know what I am talking about, Crowdwish is a site where you can post wishes/vote for wishes, and the ones which get the most votes, will be actioned! I’ve so far got a £30 Topshop voucher, and one of my own personal wishes actioned! Pretty cool huh? You can literally wish for anything as long as you think other people will vote for it too… so don’t go wishing for your brother’s girlfriend’s aunty’s granddad’s godmother to be able to fly… I wish you good luck on that one! 😉 The sunglasses remind me of the Jeremy Scott wing ones, so I’m really chuffed that I ordered them!

my style ootd fashion blog sugarhill boutique rings and tings my style ootd fashion blog sugarhill boutique rings and tings

The other day I slipped on my lovely ASOS SOLDIER heels to find out that I no longer fit in them… so I thought. I then realised that I had left the innersoles in them! *slaps forehead* I’ve been wearing them non-stop this past week, and I simply adore them. ASOS shoes are looking good at the moment! I believe these are no longer available, but if you’re wondering just in-case, they’re really comfortable and the chunkiness will toughen up any outfit! Oh and can we admire those gorgeous flowers? Such a beautiful array of colours!

That’s it for me folks! See ya’ soooooon! Only 5 days until the Company Magazine Style Blogger Awards shortlist comes around… let’s all keep our fingers crossed that TDPFashion makes it for the 2nd year in a row *crosses fingers, toes and any other ‘crossable’ body part* 😉

14th Birthday Wishlist: ASOS, Fluffy Shorts etc…

By May 2, 2014 Wishlist

Hey peeps! It’s officially only 17 days until this gal (uhu, yup, me) turns 14… gah, sounds so weird! I started this blog when I was 11! Anyhoo, as a lot of people do on the interwebs, I’m here with a ’14th birthday wishlist’. Be warned this was written past 10pm at night, whilst listening to Vampire Weekend on full volume… don’t tell me I didn’t warn you!

14th birthday wishlist ASOS Dorothy Perkins UNIF Somewhere NowhereCamo Dress//Monster’s Print Fluffy Top//Monster’s Print Fluffy Shorts//Pastel Lilac Midi Skirt//Polka Dot Scuba Peplum Skirt//Floral Crown//Holographic Top//Dreaming of Chanel Book//Pineapple Socks//Divergent Bracelets//Pineapple Watch

Camo Dress – This was an Instagram find. When my brother says that I spend all my time flicking through endless (and pointless) selfies, I can prove him wrong because I find little gems like Somewhere Nowhere. There stuff is AWESOME! Like, totally, amazingly awesome. Even though summer is around the corner (on this subject, my birthday is meant to be sunny and 24 degrees, FYI), I would totally rock this on the cooler days. I think it would look awesome with my ASOS Soldier Heels and some sunnies. It’s totally awesome (oh, I’ve already said that about a billion times), and the style is so flattering. WANT… well it wouldn’t really be a wishlist if I didn’t want what is in it… would it?

Fluffy Monster Print Top & Shorts – Another couple of pieces from Somewhere Nowhere! How awesome?! I remember writing this post on how Sully from Monsters Inc is a new fashion trend, and here is proof! I flipping love them! I think the fit of the shorts would look amazing, again with my ASOS Soldier Heels. So freakin’ cool! These 2 pieces are probably at the top spot of my wishlist!

Pastel Lilac Midi Skirt – I’ve never thought much of Dorothy Perkins, but this skirt has definitely caught my attention! It’s so beautiful! It’s slightly girly, but because it is so full, I could see myself styling it in so many ways. I also love the stripey mesh detailing, makes it that tad bit more interesting. What do you think of it?

Polka Dot Scuba Mini Peplum Skirt – I am in LOVE with scuba at the minute. It looks so structured and every time you wear it, it just looks like it is brand new. I think this skirt would be so cute for summer, especially when you are down at the beach. I wonder whether these sorts of clothing actually work like wet suits? Haha, you never know! If they do, that would be one cute little wet… skirt? Hahah deary me…

Holographic Top – Yes, I know, I’m still banging on about holographic things. I only own my £5 River Island purse, and my sort of holographic ASOS Soldier Heels (mention #1192423412423141), so this would be amazing! It’s actually slightly pricey, but I think it looks AMAZING and I could look over the price… if somebody bought it for me *insert crying from laughter emoiji*

Dreaming of Chanel – If you haven’t seen this post I did on my Top 5 Fashion Books (read it, it has a give-away *evil cackle*), then you won’t know that I have already read Dreaming of Dior, which was fabulous (read the post… it has a review…). When doing the post (READ IT), I discovered there was another book, but not about Dior… about Chanel! I must own it immediately. In fact, it needs to be delivered to me on a tray with orange juice and a nice warm croissant (with Nutella on the side), wrapped in holographic wrapping paper, with a note saying ‘From [insert your name]’, in 17 days time *flutters eyelashes*

Divergent Bracelets – If you haven’t seen this video (hehehehehe), then you won’t know that I have read the whole Divergent series (my boy was it good), and I now of course, need the bracelets to match! These ones I found on Wanelo, are awesome! I don’t think I could choose which one to get… probably Divergent as that’s the name of the series, but maybe all of them if possible?

ASOS Bits & Bobs – A wishlist by me wouldn’t be a real wishlist without some ASOS… I think I actually have a slight addiction with their site… I also have an addiction to floral headbands and when the 2 mix together, well, I think I know what love is… *sings* Isn’t it gorgeous though!? I have a black one which is perfect (even for summer), but this one is more colourful and just all round awesome… and not too badly priced either!
I’m on a bit of a pineapple high at the moment, so when I found some pineapple socks (£3… I  can’t resist… perhaps a pre-birthday treat?), and a pastel pineapple watch, I knew I had to share them with you! To be fair, the watch isn’t that awesome, but it has pineapples and pastels on it, so I ain’t complaining!

I hope you liked this wishlist! I shall see you soon my beautiful ones…
Oh and my address to send all these goodies is… Tolly Dolly Posh, I’m Only Kidding, But I Would Really Like These Things-shire *giggles*

Embellished Dinosaur Sunglasses DIY

By April 29, 2014 DIY & Lifestyle, My Style

Hello! How are you again my friend? Or maybe you are new here… doesn’t really matter because everybody is welcome. Let’s explain this post before I get too into my rambles… You may have read this post recently about a brand I discovered, and that sparked a light bulb above my head *ding* Why not do a DIY? I’m all about supporting brands, but if I can save a few bob here and there, than I would rather put my own spin on things, so me being me, I am bring you along for the ride and sharing how exactly I re-created these embellished dinosaur sunglasses… Quick note! The Company Magazine #StyleBloggerAwards nominations close tomorrow (aka 30th April), so I would love if you could nominate my blog as Best Teen Style Blog! Click here to do so! Thank you!

diy embellished dinosaur sunglasses spangled TOY DINOSAUR €0.50 (JUMBLE SALE), SUNGLASSES (eBAY), WHITE ACRYLIC (ART SHOP), PINK ACRYLIC (DALER ROWNEY), YELLOW ACRYLIC (PEBEO STUDIO) & OPTIONAL EMBELLISHMENTS (ART SHOP)

This is basically a list of things you will need… obviously. I went for a dinosaur toy for mine because I like they way they look, plus when you see a basket full of them at a jumble sale, and you are in need of a toy (for DIY purposes… duhh), you obviously don’t pass it by, do you? My sunglasses were really cheap ones which I previously used for this sunglasses DIY. The acrylic paints you can get from anywhere really, I personally prefer the Pebeo Studio ones as they are surprisingly more opaque than the usual Daler Rowney tubes. Oh and don’t forget to name your animal of choice… I asked my brother and he said ‘Sunny’… how original, heh? You can also get some embellishments, but these are of course optional… I think the dinosaur might be enough in itself for some people!

diy embellished dinosaur sunglasses spangled The first step is to paint 2 smooth and even coats of the white acrylic. This helps the colour you put on top really stand out, and also get rid of the previous colour. I could have kept mine red, but there were a few chips on it, so this covered things up! If you have coloured sunglasses you could even keep it at this! I feel sorry for the lady in my ASOS magazine… her dress was so perfect… naughty Mr Sunny getting it all covered in dinosaur footprints! 😉

diy embellished dinosaur sunglasses spangled Then you want to paint 2 coats of your acrylic of choice. You may notice that I have left a white space on his tummy… this is because I wanted a bit of a gradient for added definition, but again, this is only optional. If you want it a block colour, then paint it all in and ignore the next step…

diy embellished dinosaur sunglasses spangled The third step is to fill in the space we left. If you decide you want it a block colour, then ignore this like I mentioned. I think he looks really cute with the pop of yellow! Make sure you are patient with this bit… I rushed because it was getting dark for pictures (#bloggerproblems), so parts of it ended up being a weird orangey, patchy colour. At first I used a sponge to get a gradient effect, but because Mr Sunny has annoying hands (do dinosaurs have hands?!), I ended up going in with a small brush as it was getting a tad messy. I also painted all the way down underneath his tail for an added effect.

diy embellished dinosaur sunglasses spangled Ergh, ignore the change of light… one day I shall own soft box lights so all my pictures will be perfect! Ha! Step 4 is a little tricky. I recommend waiting until your toy is 100% dry (maybe even wait a day), so the lens of your sunglasses don’t get mucky. For finding the perfect fit, pop on your glasses, then slip your toy friend where you want it to go. I found that Mr Sunny fitted best on the edge… which wasn’t very practical seeing as I can now only close 1 arm/temple of my glasses! You could put yours wherever you like though… just remember that they might not close up! Then whip out that hot glue gun, squeezing some onto the belly of your toy, sticking it in place. Be careful please… I don’t want to be blamed for any burnt fingers!

diy embellished dinosaur sunglasses spangled

The fifth step is totally optional, but I think it balances the whole thing out. I looked into our ‘buttons’ box, and found these sparkly gems which were the perfect size for my sunglasses. Again, just glue them down with your hot glue gun! I love how it looks like Mr Sunny is holding one of them… maybe their Mr Sunny eggs?… hang on… do male dinosaurs keep the eggs?… maybe Mr Sunny got divorced before the babies were born… and Mrs (or not Mrs anymore) Sunny decided to leave him with them all… Yep, okay I am a tad bit weird discussing an inanimate object’s relationship.

diy embellished dinosaur sunglasses spangled diy embellished dinosaur sunglasses spangled diy embellished dinosaur sunglasses spangled diy embellished dinosaur sunglasses spangled diy embellished dinosaur sunglasses spangled CAMO BLOUSE €2.00 (JUMBLE SALE)

Dah-dah! The final step is to… ROCK THOSE SUNNIES! YEAH! Papa Posh said I was brave to think I might wear these out… maybe I’ll save them for my trip to England, where wearing crazy clothes seems to be more acceptable. I love them though, and I love how Mr Sunny turned out. Do you like his colourful make-over? I certainly do! I do have to say, I’m not sure these will become my every day pair of sunglasses for this summer, but I am sure they will get used *fingers crossed*… and I will be sure to report back on how many strange looks, and laughs I get from the locals… Did I have a bit too much fun with editing that one picture above? Yes. Do I regret it? Absolutely not.

If you re-create these sunglasses, do make sure to tweet me (@TollyDollyPosh), or tag me on Instagram (@tdposh) and I will be sure to RT and have a gander!

If you liked this post and you would like to see more, do leave a comment, and maybe even nominate my blog as Best Teen Style blog here! Thanks so much! 😀

Creating the Best Wardrobe with Nike Making App

By April 24, 2014 Fashion

Howdy! *waves* Today I have another different kinda’ post like my last one, and it’s all in support of Fashion Revolution as today is the day people! Are you wearing anything #InsideOut? If you are make sure you tweet @TollyDollyPosh and @Fash_Rev with what you are wearing! Anyway, back to the post… P.S There is still time to nominate my blog!

Whilst researching more about where our clothes come from, I found out that Nike had created an app for designers (or everyone in general) to help them make better decisions on what fabrics they use when doing their collections. The App is called ‘Making’ and you can download it free from the App Store here. It basically shows you what fabrics are best for certain aspects of the process, like power usage, water, waste and even the chemistry behind it. I decided I wanted to use the App to find out which of my favourite pieces of clothes, really should be my favourite.

How did I calculate it? On the App, it gives positions from 1st to around 35th, using these positions, I could make averages which could help me find out what pieces I should really appreciate the most. For a piece which is only made of 1 fabric, I looked at it’s positions in each category, added them up, and divided them by the total of categories (i.e an average/mean), and that gave me the average position for that 1 garment. For a piece which is made of more than 1 fabric, I made the averages for each fabric, then multiplied each average by the percentage. So if a piece was 25% Cotton, I would times it by 0.25, then I would do the same to the other fabric(s), and add the totals up! The totals I have, are positions which match to the Nike Making App, so the highest position, will be the best piece in my wardrobe!

nike making app fashion revolution day nike making app fashion revolution day nike making app fashion revolution day NEON EMBROIDERED DRESS (ASOS): 95% COTTON + 5% POLYESTER – ESTIMATE

This is probably one of my favourite pieces in my wardrobe… well one of the newest ones at least. It was such a bargain in the ASOS sale, and I love it! Unfortunately though, the scores didn’t make me feel too good about it. For it to be so high on the amount of water it took to make it, and for it too use quite a lot of power, means it wasn’t such a great piece after all. Of course, I still love it, and I can’t do much about it now, but it’s a shame that it really did take such a toll on the environment. Overall Cotton comes in at 21st place (for the 95%) on average, with the Polyester (used for the orange thread) comes in at 1st, which isn’t too bad, but that is for just that 5% used.

COMPARING COTTON TO SILK

Power – Cotton uses 69% less WaterCotton uses 103% more Waste – Cotton creates 6% more
Better option – I can’t decide! It’s probably 50/50 for this one.

NIKE FREE TR FIT 5.0* (JD SPORTS): 25% RUBBER + 25% EVA FOAM + 25% POLYESTER + 25% COTTON – ESTIMATE

Seeing as I used the Nike App, it would be wrong not to include my Nike Free’s. I honestly do love them, and they are super duper comfortable. You can read my full review on them here. Unfortunately I couldn’t find the fabric percentages for them, or get an answer quick enough, so I went with a rough amount of 25% for each fabric… Other than the Polyester and Cotton, they come up quite strongly. Rubber is actually the best fabric for shoes according to the App, which I think is awesome! We should all embrace our wellies and what ever other rubber made shoes are called… perhaps?! EVA Foam is the padding you find in some shoes, and especially Nikes, FYI!

When I received this, I fell in love, and I still love it even if it is covered in cat hairs… naughty Paloma! But… do I still love it after to looking at the results? For the Viscose I had to take it that it would be Rayon-Viscose ‘Wood’ rather than ‘Bamboo’, as that is what it usually is according to Wikipedia… In my opinion the results aren’t brilliant (aka, they are pretty darn terrible), but because I love it so so much, I think I can forgive it… maybe? It’s still awful to imagine that Viscose is actually that bad to the environment… and for the Polyester to be equally as bad too. It’s a shame really.

These shoes were quite the bargain for what they are. They’re vintage, and cost me less than £20 which is pretty darn good in my eyes, so I was really interested to see what Leather came up as… unfortunately it was 20th. I can’t really tell if my shoes came from grass fed cows (sorry veggies…), or corn fed, so I just went for grass… and the results were pretty shocking. 43rd in power? The waste isn’t too bad which is a good sign, but I think the rest of them show that really… it’s probably not the best to buy leather shoes. As you can see below, when compared to Polyester… Leather uses 518… yes, 518% more power.

So…. as you can tell… my Nikes came out on top! I officially can love them a tad bit more than any other piece in my wardrobe! YAY! Plus… they look incredible, they’re totally up my street! But I don’t think I can leave you here, we need to talk about all of this…

Is Cotton always best? Throughout this post, we can see that Cotton isn’t a very nice fabric. Are there alternatives? On the Nike Making App, in 3rd place for clothing, you have Polypropylene Fabric, which is commonly used in thermal underwear and base layers. It’s strong, heat resistant and good in water. It has better chemistry than Cotton, it uses 11% less power, 57% less water, and only creates 10% more waste, so how come we haven’t seen it being experimented on with other garments? Silk is also a good alternative, other than the fact it uses 226% more power… yikes!

Buying new vs Buying old… Whilst doing all of this, I have realised that the options we go for straight away, aren’t always the best, which leads me on to the question… should we buy new Cotton, polyester and other bad fabrics? If we buy new, we are putting more money into the specific industries, which means more of these fabrics will be made, and that means, more power and water will be used, and more waste will be created, where as, if we were to purchase second hand pieces, not only are we helping the people we buy from, but also we are avoiding pumping more dough into already unhealthy fabric industries. Even if Cotton is what we usually go for, if it is using so much energy up, why should we carry on funding it? Do ya’ get my flow here? Do ya’?

Go and download the app, and create your best wardrobe. Find out which pieces were really worth the money. Leave a comment telling me what your results were!

Hello my gorgeous munchkins (or handsome, for you boys out there), I hope you are well! Today marks a special day because *dun dun dunnn* the Company Magazine Style Blogger Awards 2014 – that’s a mouthful… or keyboard full?… – are open for business! 😀 I do kinda’ hate these posts, but of course any blogger in their right mind wants to let their readers know about special occasions, and this is one of them. Before you read… I am in no way saying you have to nominate me, I only wish for you to if you really feel I and my blog are worthy enough!

I still feel bamboozled about the moment when a tweet came in last year saying ‘You’re shortlisted! Congrats’… it was crazy. I think my heart skipped a beat. I still cannot thank you all enough for getting me from being nominated to the actual event… I want to hug every single one of you. Luckily I did get to hug some of you including my best pineapple, Anna and the lovely Alex (they both rock) last year, and I still have the photo-booth pictures to prove it. For some reason I am a lot more nervous for this year. Even though I don’t have to enter or even tweet saying I want to, I just have those extra few butterflies in my tummy. It would absolutely mean the world to me if you clicked the link above (or this one) and just nominated. Obviously you don’t have to, but it would make me smile a tad more 🙂 My awesome GIF tells you exactly how to do it… just in case 😉
